Saraha Buddhist Institute Founding Teachers

HH Dudjom Rinpoche, Jigdral Yeshe Dorje

His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, Jigdral Yeshe Dorje (1904-1987)

Actually, there can be no short biography of HH Dudjom Rinpoche.  The reincarnation of a long line of miraculous Buddhist masters, including HH Dudjom Lingpa, the founder of the Dudjom Lineage.  A superlative master himself, supreme head of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism, a teacher of teachers, a father of teachers.  At the same time that HH Dudjom Rinpoche's accomplishments amaze the curious and stun the arrogant into speechless wonder, for honest admirers there is simply too much good that can be said about him. Several online sites have published extensive materials by and about HH Dudjom Rinpoche.  Rather than reprint or attempt to rephrase them here, we will simply refer to a few of them below.

(On Nov. 8, 1980, while traveling in the United States, HH Dudjom Rinpoche visited, taught and conferred empowerment at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Eugene, Oregon.  When this property came up for sale in 2011, Buddhist Lamas and students of the Dudjom Lineage,  recognizing the unique, holy and historical nature of this site united to purchase and develop the property as a center for Buddhist practice and education.  Our organization, the Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute, was incorporated at that time and for this purpose.  You can read the story of how all this happened HERE.)

Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche, Sangye Pema Shepa

Born in 1990, Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche is the manifest emanation, or "Tulku" of the Buddha's wisdom, previously incarnated as HH Dudjom Rinpoche.  He was recognized as such by HH Chadral Rinpoche, who became the supreme leader of the Dudjom Lineage following the Parinirvana of HH Dudjom Rinpoche in 1987.  He also served and studied with HH Chadral Rinpoche from the time of their introduction until the present day. Other masters who have concurred and repeated this recognition of Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche include HH Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche, HH Minling Trichen Rinpoche, HH Penor Rinpoche, and HH Sakya Trizin Rinpoche.  Following the example of his predecessor, Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche's childhood and youth have been devoted to study, practice and retreat.

In recent years Rinpoche has begun to travel, teach and lead Buddhist events. One such signal event was the complete transmission of the entire canon of the teachings of the Dudjom Lineage, which was conferred at Samye Memorial Instiitute near the holy Buddhist site of Yanglesho, Nepal, in April 2012. Despite his youth, Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche's demeanor, conduct and expression of the Dharma are already awe-inspiring. Dudjom Yangsi Rinpoche is the Presiding Director of our organization, the Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute.

The following short biography of Lama Tharchin Rinpoche, as it originally appeared on this site, remains unchanged ...

Lama Tharchin Rinpoche is a Dzogchen (Great Perfection) master of Vajrayana Buddhism. He is the tenth-generation lineage holder of the Repkong Ngakpas. This is a family lineage of yogis, or householders, and was the largest community of non-monastic practitioners in Tibet.  Rinpoche was trained in His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche's monastery, engaged in five years of solitary retreat and then completed the traditional  three-year retreat with three others under Dudjom Rinpoche.

In addition to Dudjom Rinpoche, his main teachers have been HH Chadral Rinpoche, Lama Sherab Dorje Rinpoche, and HH Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche.  Rinpoche left Tibet by foot with his family in 1960. Many of the early years of Rinpoche's life were dedicated to intensive study, practice and retreat. Mastering the many traditions of his lineage under the guidance of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, Lama Tharchin Rinpoche benefits countless beings through his purity of his heart and compassionate activity.

Fulfilling the request of his teacher, Lama Tharchin Rinpoche came to the West with the intention to protect the holy Buddhadharma and to plant authentic seeds of Dharma.  Rinpoche's blessings and accomplishments have flowed like rich wisdom nectar. Founder of the Vajrayana Foundation in Watsonville, California, Rinpoche is also a Founding Director of our organization, the Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute.

Lama Gyaltsen arrived in the USA in 1996.    He is author of one book of Tibetan history, and several publications on various Buddhist subjects.  He has also assisted either in the editing or translation of numerous Buddhist texts.  Lama Gyaltsen assisted or directed the creation of the Padma Charitable Foundation, located in Corvallis, Oregon, where he serves as the founding and head Dharma teacher.  He is a Founding Director and Vice-President of our organization, the Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute.

Lama Sonam Tsering

Under the guidance of His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, Lama Sonam completed his extensive Buddhist education at the Ngagyur Shedrup Dodjo Ling, receiving the advanced degree of Khenpo, equivalent to a Doctors degree, in Buddhist philosophy, art and science. He received the complete teachings, empowerments and instructions on the Dudjom Tersar and other Nyingmapa traditions from many lamas and Khenpos.

In 1984 Chagdud Rinpoche invited Lama Sonam to the United States.  Over the years, he served as a resident lama at Dechen Ling Buddhist Center, Chagdud Gonpa, in Cottage Grove, Oregon.  In 1999, His Holiness Dungse Thinley Norbu Rinpoche and Lama Tharchin Rinpoche both entrusted Lama Sonam to oversee and guide the Vajrayana Foundation, Pema Osel Ling Retreat center where he currently resides.

Lama Sonam has an extraordinary way of conveying the wisdom and compassion of the Buddhadharma to young people and adults in the west.   He is a humble practitioner with boundless energy for the dharma which he ceaselessly applies joyfully for the benefit all beings. He is a Founding Director and President of our organization, the Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute.
